This is my breif knowledge, further resticted by a desire not to give away spoilers but...
In the semi-idyllic land of Ascalon, life has its ups and downs, but anyone who wants to work at it can earn a pretty good life for themselves. The game starts on the last day of this peaceful time, and at a specific point the day becomes really ugly and an invading army of monsters (the name of which I can't seem to find at the moment) comes in and blows everything up. Pretty much literally. After "the specific point" you are in a kind of shanty town in the ruins of the city, and it's up to you, Player One, to help put things right again. In a sense, "Greetings, Starfighter! You have been recruited by the Star League to defend the frontier against Xur and the Kodan armada!" only in a fantasy/D&D setting and less Robert Preston. Or not. ^_^ Dave III |

The storyline in which your heroes play the central role is really not so much a single storyline but a series.
Spoilers follow but I'll be pretty vague. There's a prelude in the Kingdom of Ascalon, but the main story kicks off with a massive, devestating attack on Ascalon. Thus first tale then involves the attempts by the survivors to defend what is left of their kingdom. Thus ultimately proves impossible, and if this were a series of novels, you'd probably break it right about there. The next novel would feature the actions of the heroes as they attempt to lead refugees to the safety of a distant, more idillic land or Kryta. There are hardships and tragedies, but eventually they make it there. Cue the third novel. Having arriving in the distant land, we discover that in fact things are less than ideal here. The refugees settle into their new home, but it's immediately obvious from the moment you arrive that a dark shadow has fallen across Kryta. Uncovering exactly what the source of this shadow is and dealing with it is where the story goes from there, but I won't say more beyond the answer is not obvious, and Kryta turns out to be quite a den of intrigue, double-dealing, and backstabbing, and that with the missions seen in the BWE's, we still don't know how it all turns out, or indeed who ultimately was the worst of the bad guys... If this were a 5-part series, the titles might be: Book 1: The Last Defenders of Ascalon (covering events up to the final meeting between Adelburn and Rurik). Book 2: The Survivors of Ascalon (covering the flight of the refugees across the Shiverpeaks to the Gates of Kryta). Book 3: The White Mantle (covering the events up to the recovery of the Chosen). Book 4: The Shining Blade (covering the events up to the end of the Sanctum Cay mission). Book 5: The Sands of Fate (forthcoming, title tentative) Last edited by Dreamsmith; Mar 30, 2005 at 06:52 PM // 18:52.. |
